star valley pudding

½ cup sugar
½ cup fat
1 ½ cup sifted flour
7 TBS salt (?)
½ cup milk
1 cup cut dates
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
Mix as a cake. Put in greased pan (9x13) be sure to cover bottom evenly.
Caramelize 1 cup sugar in heavy pan, stirring all the time until it melts. Add 2 cups water. Cook until sugar dissolves. Pour over cake mixture boiling hot. Bake ½ hour at 375 degrees.
