Temp: 350 degrees for 5/10 minutes
Sift:
1 cup sugar
Beat until soft
½ cup butter
Add the sugar gradually. Blend these ingredients until creamy. Beat in:
One (1) egg
Combine:
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup sour cream
Sift before measuring
2 cups all purpose flour
Resift with:
1/3 tsp soda
½ tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
Add the flour to butter mixture in 3 parts alternately with thirds of the cream. Beat completely after each addition. Chill dough for 12 hours. Roll on lightly floured board. Cut into shapes and place on greased sheet.

peanut butterscotchers
1 1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons double acting baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup evaporated milk
2 unbeaten eggs
1 tablespoon grated lemon rind
Sift flour with baking powder & salt. Melt butter in pan; remove from heat. Add sugar and milk; blend well. Blend in eggs, beat well. Stir in dry ingredients and lemon rind; mix well. Pour into 15x10x1 inch pan or aluminum foil pan. Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes. Cool; spread with topping (butterscotch). Let stand until set, cut.

3-inch piece of vanilla bean pod or 1 1/2 t vanilla
1 1/2 c. milk
1 T cornstarch
1/4 t salt
3/4 c sugar
4 egg yolks
1 1/2 c whipping cream
Split pod & scrape seeds into milk; chop in pod. Scald. Combine cornstarch,salt, sugar, and slightly beaten egg yolks, & mix well. Beat in a little scalded milk, then combine the two mixtures and cook over a low heat or in a double boiler, stirring constantly, until thick & smooth (add vanilla if bean not used.) Chill, then stir in cream.
Pour into freezer can, no more than 2/3 full and chill thoroughly. Assemble, freeze, using 1 part rock salt to 8 parts crushed ice. Turn about 15 minutes for 2 quart size or until hard to move. Carefully remove dasher.
Serve.

1/8 teaspoon salt
Drain juice from cherries. Combine cherries, sugar, flour, salt. Put in pastry and dot with butter. Bake 450 degree oven 10 min - then reduce to 350 for 30 min.

boston cream pie
Use either a plain cake or a white cake as a foundation, with the following cream filling:

Melt one cube margarine or butter in 1 & 1/2 cups boiling water, then add 1 cup oatmeal (regular, not instant). Mix 2 eggs, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup white sugar, add to first mixture. Then add 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp nutmeg, 1 tsp soda, 1 tsp vanilla, and 1/2 tsp salt. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes.

1 cup nuts
1 cup coconut
Mix, spread on cake. Place under broiler till bubbly and light brown. Watch carefully, don't leave unattended.

It's true. We did love Grandma Hilva's kitchen. Let's be honest; it was hard to resist being in there, even if it was cramped at times. The mouth-watering aromas that seemed to grab you by your nose and pull you along were too great a temptation to ignore. But when I close my eyes, even better than the smells, are the memories of seeing Grandma working in her kitchen. Standing at the stove, stirring a pot. Or reaching up to get a serving dish or something from the pantry. Wiping her hands on her apron or placing food on the dining room table. And of course how she always had time to give you a hug, no matter what she was making. These are the precious memories I know I'll never forget. Especially when those familiar aromas fill my own kitchen as I prepare one of her recipes. One whiff of freshly baked rolls, or a pot roast, and I'm right back in her kitchen, cooking along side her. ~Rachael, granddaughter

The recipes on this site are either shown in Grandma's handwriting or typed EXACTLY as she wrote them. Only recipes that she wrote by hand or had written-on are included in this collection. This is due to sheer volume, as she had 100's of recipes, both clipped from newspapers, magazines, off of packaging, etc. and handwritten. I've found recipes written on deposit slips, receipts for furniture, envelopes, church service programs, etc. Often times the recipes weren't written in their entirety, and instead of assuming what was missing, they are printed here without that information.
